Doing Spring Break on a Budget and How to Protect Your Travel Dollar

Published: Feb 3, 2026

Do you want to take a vacation this spring? Many do. It’s a great way to shake off the snow and ice, and say “hello” to warmer weather and sunnier days. But can you afford it?

According to Go Blue Tours, the average spring break costs between $800 to $2,000 per person. That’s a lot of cash. But there are ways to save without your experience suffering. EF’s GO blog, provides 9 tips for traveling on a budget. Even though these tips aren’t spring-break specific, they are applicable to the spring-break scenario. Here’s a summary:

  • Come up with a plan – nothing so inside-the-box that you lose flexibility, but a general outline of what you plan to do, what you plan to spend, and how long you think you’ll do it
  • Travel out of season – avoid holidays and weekends if possible
  • Be accommodation-savvy – consider hostels, simpler hotels, and renting a room from a person’s home as opposed to high-end resort lodging
  • Pack properly – by packing everything you need, you’ll be less likely to make purchases for necessities you didn’t pack
  • Book flights in advance – it’s common knowledge that flight prices generally increase as the flight date nears, so purchasing tickets as far out in advance is wise
  • Be smart about how you fly – not all days are equal, so fly on days that are most cost effective, like during mid-week
  • Embrace public transport – doing so can save you considerable money as bus and train tickets are generally cheaper than taking a flight
  • Don’t eat away your cash – try buying your meals at supermarkets versus more expensive restaurants and eateries
  • Earn while you travel – if you have a skill, skiing for example, consider teaching ski lessons while on break

But which spring break destinations are more affordable? AAA Travel breaks it all down with eight affordable destinations for 2026. These destinations won’t disappoint you in terms of quality or bang for your buck.

Even if you take precautions to keep your budget reasonable and choose an affordable destination, you still need to have considerable funds available if you want to have an enjoyable spring break experience. It would be a shame if you lost those funds because of something outside of your control. For example, what happens to your flight costs if you get sick just before departure and can’t go on your trip? Or, how do you recoup your lodging costs if a hurricane wipes out your destination just prior to you going? Here are a few more things to consider – what if you:

  • Need to evacuate your destination due to political unrest or a natural disaster like an earthquake?
  • Get sick or injured during your vacation stay and need medical attention or must go home early for required medical care?
  • Have a death in the family and decide not to go on your trip for that reason?

The above list is not exhaustive. The mind truly boggles on what could happen. Unfortunately, if you don’t prepare, you could potentially lose your trip budget if you end up being unable to go on your trip. Furthermore, if you require evacuation or medical care, that could be an additional unforeseen cost.

Fortunately, there is a way to protect your trip from a financial perspective. The answer, according to Dan Drennen, Director of Sales and Marketing at Travel Insurance Center®, is to purchase suitable travel insurance. Dan says, “travel insurance is a great way to hedge against the risk of losing your travel funds due to unforeseen circumstances.”

One might think that travel insurance doesn’t belong in a blog about how to take spring break on a budget because having travel insurance represents an added cost. However, Drennen explains that insurance should be part of every travel budget, even those where the traveler is trying to keep funds reasonable – especially where the traveler is trying to keep funds reasonable.

Here’s the question you need to answer: If I lose my travel budget, will I miss that money? For most, the answer is a resounding “yes”, regardless of the amount at stake. If you look at it that way, obtaining travel insurance is a reasonable and wise thing to do.
