Emergency Medical Evacuation

Why travelers purchase Emergency Medical Evacuation

Not all medical facilities were created equal. Depending on the plan, emergency medical evacuation covers the cost of transporting a seriously injured or ill person to one of the following locations:

  • The nearest adequate medical facility
  • A hospital near home
  • Or the hospital of his/her choice

Emergency medical evacuation is usually included with both travel medical insurance and trip protection plans. Enter a $0.00 trip cost into our Policy Picker® to compare travel protection plans that include medical transportation and medical evacuation (deleting trip cancellation coverage.)

Emergency Medical Evacuation FAQs

Who decides when a medical evacuation is necessary?

An emergency medical evacuation will generally occur if it is recommended by an attending physician at the medical facility or hospital you are in and it is agreed to by the medical director of the travel insurance company or their representative. Always make sure the insurance company is envolved in making the decision. They contract with emergency evacuation providers worldwide for these services to be preformed on their behalf. Do not arrange a medical evacuation yourself. You may not be reimbursed for it.

Are there any evacuation plans available in which I have more of a say in the evacuation process?

Yes. Travel MedEvac Insurance and Medjet Assist membership plans give you the ability to choose your evacuation hospital if you are hospitalized anywhere in the world outside your home country or more than 150 miles from home for all U.S. residents.  Evacuation may be to a hospital near your home or one in another country that you may prefer. Coverage area is worldwide.
