Travel tips for senior citizens
Created 7/8/2010
Retirement can be a great time to get out and see the world. With no job to tie seniors down, many opt to travel to popular locales like Europe and experience different cultures.
Senior citizens have some special considerations when they opt to go on vacation overseas, as outlined in a recent column in the Pocono Record. However, these should not stop them from exploring all that the world has to offer.
Elderly travelers should know that Medicare will not cover them while they are overseas. Fortunately, there are travel insurance plans with medical coverage that will act as a primary provider in case they fall ill while abroad. As many seniors book lengthy trips, travel insurance is a worthwhile purchase.
Many seniors will be traveling with medication. There are special rules regarding the transport of pharmaceuticals overseas. Travelers should be sure that they have all of their pills in their original bottles, as well as prescriptions for everything that they take. In addition, a doctor's note detailing why the patient needs the medication will help with customs and security checks.
It might be a good idea to pack these critical items, along with things like eyeglasses, in carry-on luggage. That way, in the event that checked luggage is lost, seniors are not without the things they need. Trip protection insurance will also provide compensation in case things go wrong, like cancelled flights or lost baggage.
