Tropical storm Alex becomes season's first hurricane
Created 6/30/2010
Hurricane season is officially upon North America, as the tropical storm known as Alex has been upgraded to a hurricane. Those who plan to travel in areas subject to hurricane activity should consider purchasing travel insurance that provides for damage caused by hurricanes.
According to NASA, Alex is approaching the coast of Mexico and southern tip of Texas. The storm is classified as a category 1 hurricane, and the maximum sustained winds are 80 miles per hour. The storm is currently moving west-northwest at 7 mph.
The National Weather Service has issued tropical storm, hurricane and tornado warnings, depending on the area. The storm has yet to make landfall, but is expected to soon.
Officials working on the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico initially worried that Alex might disrupt cleanup efforts, according to CNN. Although the hurricane missed the area affected by the spill, its winds sent 12 foot waves toward cleanup crews, forcing them to halt efforts for a short while.
