Politically conscious travelers boycott Arizona
Created 6/22/2010
Arizona's controversial new immigration law has drawn fire from critics around the country, with many proposing a boycott of the state in response. Politically conscious travelers who planned a trip to Arizona may wish they had travel insurance with a "cancel for any reason" policy should they ultimately choose to engage in the boycott.
Several city councils have announced a boycott of Arizona-based companies and have suspended travel to Arizona in the wake of the firestorm that has erupted because of the law. Los Angeles, Sacramento, and Durham, North Carolina, are just a few of the cities that have shunned the state. Many other citizens, especially those with immigrant ties, are undertaking their own personal boycott.
The controversial bill requires officers to stop and investigate any person who appears to be an illegal immigrant. Critics have labeled the bill as racist and not reflective of the America's immigrant roots.
The debate could derail summer travel plans to the Grand Canyon and other popular Arizona destinations, especially among politically conscious travelers. Those who feel strongly about the law may indeed wish to book their vacation elsewhere. Purchasing a "cancel for any reason" policy not only protects travelers in the case of an unexpected event, but also affords them flexibility in changing their vacation plans on the fly.
