Billionaire's death sparks African flight concerns

A small plane crash on the border of Congo and Cameroon has left eleven dead and analysts worrying over the safety of flights in Africa. Flight accidents are a rare yet dangerous threat, and corporate travel planners should ensure that their company's travel insurance policy covers them.

Among the dead was Ken Talbot, an Australian mining billionaire who served on Sundance Resources' board of directors. Several of Sundance's top executives, including its CEO, were also killed in the crash. The Sundance executives were on their way to examine a large amount of iron ore that had recently been found in Cameroon.

Africa's infrastructure is not up to par with the rest of the world, especially with regards to airports and flight safety. Often, flights are performed by small charter companies that fly planes that may not be up to safety regulations. Many of the airports and runways are in disrepair, and safety programs are not as rigorous as elsewhere. Of the thirty fatal airplane crashes last year, ten took place in Africa.

Travelers should be sure to invest in insurance that provides in the case of flight accidents or accidental death. In addition, businesses may want to look into annual multi-trip packages that will protect their employees year-round, especially if they travel through high-risk areas.
