Security expert gives tips for travelers
Created 6/9/2010
The World Cup is set to kick off this week in South Africa, but many eyes are on the activities off the pitch. On Tuesday, three foreign journalists sent to cover the games were robbed of their valuables. Another robbery took place in the Colombian national team's hotel rooms.
Security expert Johan Burger of the South African Police Service recently gave some safety tips to the Christian Science Monitor for those traveling to the games. Even if you plan on watching the festivities from home, the advice pertains to travel all over the world.
Burger advised travelers to talk to the locals working at their hotel to find out where the safest areas are and not stray outside of them. They should also get exact directions to everything they plan to do before they go. If travelers are forced to walk through unsafe areas to get to their destination, they are much safer in groups, especially those organized by local tour companies.
He also suggested that travelers not wear any expensive jewelry, as it attracts thieves. Visitors should keep their wallets in their front pockets to deter pickpockets. Burger cautioned that the vast majority of robberies are non-violent, and trouble only arises when victims resist.
Sometimes, vacationers may take all the precautions in the world and still be in the wrong place at the wrong time. The best way to prevent this is to purchase travel insurance ahead of time.
